Web 2.0 is not punk rock

March 2, 2006 —

I just read a post written by a self-proclaimed Web 2.0 evangelist. He was praising the movement and offhandedly summed up what makes a 2.0 app 2.0. It went like this: big font, bright colors, easy to use.

1. WTF? Is there some kind of V-Chip I can install to check the age-appropriateness of postings? i.e.:This post is rated IA and may not be suitable for audiences over the age of 19. Doing so may make you dumber.

2. When does Web 2.0 get to be about making exciting new apps that are financially solvent again? Somebody wake me up when Russell Beattie posts another rant, it’s nice to know there are others.

There are a lot of web 2.0 applications making good money. Maybe you’re looking in the wrong places.

Hello Riley. My point isn’t that web 2.o isn’t driving great online applications and businesses. I’m saying there a lot of people attaching to the web 2.o visual renaissance and totally missing the business side. Tubular font and happy colors alone aren’t enough to drive progress. I agree – there are some exciting things going on. Thanks for your comments.
