52 is better than 79 million

April 11, 2006 —

Earlier today I was made aware of Huckabuck, a new metasearch engine that allows visitors to blend search queries and “tune results”. For a minute or so, I was pretty impressed with the site. But then I remembered why I don’t like apps like this at all: they return more results. I don’t need 78,439,998 results if I’m looking for a mountain bike.

Instead of more, give us focused. Let users categorically filter out clubs, associations, enthusiasts, races, trails, magazines, blogs, classifieds, personal home pages, and safety courses. Bring on tags – let the Internet community police their relevance. Allow us to specify whether we want to return only those pages that allow secure online transactions. Let us select a language and currency. Give us the ability to target a geographic region. Give us 52 results.

And then, we will all heart Huckabuck.
