The financial sleeping giant of Wikipedia is advertising. It’s been discussed before, and it’s been estimated a comprehensive advertising deal for the site would be worth $100 million or more per year.
Remember too that there are different classes of ads. Wikipedia might end up like NPR, where certain sections are “sponsored” by certain companies, which no call to action, just a logo, a name, and a URL. That alone would easily bring in enough to keep the servers running for centuries.
