You mean you charge for what you do?

March 12, 2007 —

I’m impressed by the average “what do you do?” responses I’m hearing in Austin. Conference goers have no problem explaining their ideas and efforts – and most are good (a little odd sometimes, but good.)

I’m also impressed by the need for business consultants.

Maybe I’m short-sighted, but I don’t see the business model behind “free, personalized, micro, social networks for lawyers” or “free online contests that anyone can set up.” And when I ask “how do you make money?” I’m getting a lot of blank stares, and even a couple of “what do you mean?”(‘s.)

Very few seem to be storming the enterprise or licensing products or mining data or charging for use of any kind (overt or covert.) It’s very much an “I need funding” environment.

I can’t imagine running Feed Rinse as a business – it’s an app and not a profitable one. But I may be in a minority state of mind.
