Anyone remember a time when they could sum up what they do in a single sentence? I build websites. I can say it. My mother can understand it. But it’s only about 49% of what I do these days, and even then, it’s still pretty vague.
Last night, I ran into someone who really does just build websites. That’s it. Forty hours a week. All client work. Fifty percent up front, balance upon completion.
This guy needs to write a book entitled “Keeping It Simple.” I wouldn’t read it, but it’d be nice to know there’s some kind of reference available.

Keeping it Simple – Come on, where’s the fun in that. I can sympathize with not being able to describe what I do. 40% of my time goes to building Web sites and Web apps. I love it. But the other 60% is the planning and finding solutions to client’s problems. That’s the fun stuff.
Agreed – no fun in it at all. With everything going on in internet marketing or web 2.o, I don’t know how anyone can focus on just one thing. For the official transcript, I’m including any strategic planning as “building” and any client web apps or supporting campaigns as “websites.” The rest of my time goes towards other efforts – this blog, other blogs, wellstream, feed rinse, other things… Maybe I’ll just start saying “I work on computers.”
