Blog search and internet search are two entirely separate things to me. I use technorati for the former, Google for the latter.
It says a lot that a company (t’rati) can come out of nowhere and create an entirely separate (/ superior) destination for content search of any kind, and I imagine we’re counting down the few remaining days before a Google acquisition. With that in mind, I want to air a request before T’rati sells the monster: dedupe blog posts from search results.
I subscribe to a few name searches (eg: Electric Pulp,) and it was hard to miss the number of splogs “syndicating” Guy Kawasaki’s recent post, word for word. This is an issue that already impacts the usability of the site, and it’s only going to get worse.
Call me crazy, but the solution seems pretty simple: block duplicate posts from any blog not claimed by the original author. (Or just allow users the option to block them from search results.) Verifying the original author is as simple as monitoring which blog posted first.
I’m not really sure who I’m pleading my case to here, but I thought it was worth making a last ditch pitch before popping the hood on Feed Rinse. Michael gets so grumpy these days when I wreck things…
