I love how this idea of social network portability is starting to trickle from the mad scientist types to the product managers and forward thinking members of popular website.

I also agree that there needs to be a more structured approach to get the geek-reek out of the whole concept, however I believe the first step is getting OpenID adopted by more new sites and increasing awareness and explaining, in simple terms, the real benefit of having an OpenID. Then having the majority of profiles on the web marked up with hCard and XFN, will allow the bleeding edge sites to provide their users the ability to import their "world" from their other sites. Once users experience the ease of transferring this information, they will begin demanding it of the major players. I do not believe we can plot out a grand vision with multiple dependencies and expect it to be adopted, I think it needs to be accomplished 1 site at a time.

Just my thoughts.
