A few conversations had me thinking I must be hitting the “damn we’re busy” tone too hard on this blog. Looking back at a few posts, I can see it: poor us. Blah.

Something else I caught, though, as I was reading myself is that I’ve been complaining specifically about [limited] bandwidth, as if adding people would balance things out and make it all right and good.

But it’s pretty clear that the points in our career that we’ve gotten ahead really don’t have anything to do with how busy we were at the time. It has to do with whether or not we were paying attention to what was going on around us / whether or not we acted on it (pushing out new site designs, launching new products, forcing certain gigs through, etc.)

It’s also getting clear that the people I read / follow / crush on are the ones paying attention, hitting the conferences, jamming on side works, networking. And, I doubt they’re any less busy than us.

So, I’m done with the “all work and no play” meme. Deane can have it. I’m back on paying attention. I’ll let you know how it goes.
